How can the idea of "Freedom of Choice" benefit to the happiness of all people?

Here in the United States, we take for granted the fact we live as free citizens with the ability for us to choose, within reason, how we wish to live our lives. Freedom inevitably leads to greater happiness for people. That being said, how can this idea of freedom of choice be applied further to improve the happiness of citizens of the United States? I believe that giving people more freedom in the both the markets of education and health care will lead to more options in life and thus allow them more control of their lives.
